1916 Historic California Spanish
Story

Restoration + Renovation

previously the house had been completely insensitively remodeled

Among Riverside Ca. treasures stands a historic downtown home, a true gem that holds a significant place in the city's narrative. Constructed between late1914 and 1916 as the inaugural residence in the Larchwood Tract Development, this home reflects the architectural richness of its era.

Undertaking the restoration, interior, and landscape design project of this architectural treasure, the team at Romero + Obeji embarked on a mission to honor its storied past while infusing it with modern elegance. Led by meticulous research and a deep appreciation for historical integrity, they uncovered fascinating details about the home's origins.

Designed by renowned Riverside architect Wilmer P. Lamar, the home originally showcased a blend of architectural styles reflecting its time. Drawing inspiration from Spanish influences, Mission Revival, Italianate, and Craftsman design, it boasted a unique fusion of characteristics. However, over the years, insensitive remodeling marred its original charm.

In the 1980's, misguided renovations replaced authentic craftsmanship with trendy features, leaving behind a diminished version of its former self. Determined to revive its timeless allure, the team embarked on a comprehensive restoration journey, peeling back layers of neglect to reveal hidden treasures.

One of the significant challenges was restoring the home's interior to its former grandeur. Meticulously integrating old and new elements, they selected furnishings, artwork, and lighting that paid homage to the home's rich heritage. Drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, bespoke built-ins were designed to seamlessly blend with the original architecture.

Deep into the home's soul, the designers team restored original hardwood floors and introduced terracotta-colored cement tiles, breathing new life into forgotten spaces. Rejecting the idea of crafting a static tableau frozen in time, they curated a living tapestry that blended elements from different epochs, reflecting the home's diverse history.

With an eye for authenticity, the team handpicked furnishings spanning centuries of design evolution, creating an ambiance that feels curated over generations. Incorporating custom items by local artisans, their nuanced approach to interior styling showcases dedication to crafting spaces that feel lived-in and authentic.

Romero + Obeji took a thoughtful approach to redesigning the landscape, especially given the challenges of drought in California. By incorporating native plants and trees, they not only conserve water but also contribute to the local ecosystem. The decision to remove a diseased pecan tree was likely a necessary step to ensure the health and safety of the landscape. Overall, their efforts prioritized sustainability and resilience in the face of environmental concerns.

The result is a harmonious fusion of past and present, preserving Riverside's architectural heritage for generations to come. As proud stewards of history, Romero + Obeji played a significant role in bringing this historic gem back to life.

Thanks to all the artisans, contractors and gardeners for the love and care you put into this project!
